I'm interested in playing in the upcoming Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament that's being held during Bootfest. Can you provide more information about registering, pay-out, etc.?

Put on your poker face and get ready to play some cards at a Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament at Bootfest on Oct. 22.

The tournament starts at 11 a.m. at 120 S. Main St. in downtown Victoria. Entry fee is $100 and registration is limited to the first 180 entrants. If the tournament draws 180 players, the pay-out to the tournament first place winner will be $5,400 and cash prizes will also be distributed to the other top nine poker players.

For a list of payout percentages, visit bootfest.org/poker.php.

Participants must be 21 years of age or older and must present a proper ID. Accepted identification include a U.S. state-issued driver's license or identification card (with photo), U.S. military ID, or passport.

When will the city's new Household Hazardous Waste Program be implemented? How does the program work and what types of items can be picked up?

Every household in Victoria has some type of household hazardous waste - such as E-waste (televisions, computer monitors, keyboards, printers, etc.), paint, cleaning and pool supplies, cooking and motor oil, poison, insecticides, pesticides, gasoline and aerosols.

Beginning Nov. 1, the city of Victoria and Waste Management Inc. will provide a new, convenient, responsible and safe way to dispose of household hazardous waste year-round with a home pick-up service. To participate, residents must contact the Call Center at 1-800-449-7587 to arrange a collection appointment. Operators at the Call Center will discuss the types of household hazardous waste products that need to be disposed of.

The center will send you a household hazardous waste collection kit, information about where to place the items for collection, as well as a date when the items will be collected from your residence. The collection kit includes an instruction sheet and other items to assist you with packing and securing household hazardous waste.

Materials that will not be collected include ammunition, medicine, explosives, asbestos or any other unlabeled or leaking containers.

On the scheduled date, a technician will collect materials directly from your home and transport the materials for safe and proper recycling and disposal. For questions or more information, please call Environmental Services at 361-485-3230.

When will the next National Night Out event be held?

Each year, the Victoria Police Department participates in the National Night Out program, an event held in communities all over the country to raise awareness about drug and crime prevention programs, and to strengthen police-community relations.

National Night Out 2011 will be Oct. 4 and will feature neighborhood block parties throughout Victoria, cookouts, visits from police and sheriff's office officials, contests, youth programs and hayrides throughout the community.

This year's Annual Kick-Off Party will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Victoria Mall and will offer entertainment, booths and family fun for all ages.

For more information, contact the Victoria Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at 361-485-3808.
