County grant opens door to more funding

Victoria County did its part on Tuesday to feed the county's homebound.

The commissioners court authorized a $4,800 grant on Tuesday to the Community Action Committee of Victoria. The grant made the committee eligible to receive further grant funding for its Meals on Wheels program.

Before receiving funding from the Texas Department of Agriculture, organizations providing home-delivered meal services programs must receive county funding, said Vicki Smith, executive director of the committee.

Judge Don Pozzi called the Community Action Committee a great help to the community. He added that the grant's funding was a long way off from the total cost of the Meals on Wheels program.

The program has additional benefits besides providing a hot meal. Smith explained that the program allows the homebound, elderly and disabled to live on their own instead of in an assisted-living situation.

"It's more than a hot meal, Monday through Friday at noon. It's also a contact," Smith said.

Those delivering the meals are able to check up on their clients as they deliver the meal, Smith said.

The committee welcomes volunteers who would like to deliver meals, Smith said. For information on how to get involved, call 361-578-2989.
