Is the Parks and Recreation Department responsible for all the events in Riverside Park?
The short answer to this question is no.
The long answer is, although we are not responsible for the design or elements of these events, we assist with various planning aspects as they relate to the city's park. Many events use areas of the park that require a usage fee or have a need to close down a street and this triggers the Parks and Recreation involvement with an event.
This process begins when a customer contacts or visits our office and requests a date and location for their event. The event is then placed on our calendar as "pending."
As a service, the recreation staff meets with the event coordinator to discuss the details of their event. At this meeting, staff discusses possible conflicts with other parks events and how it might affect the pending event. We also discuss the following items and assist the customer with completing the proper forms:
Parks Policies and Procedures
Street Closure Permits
Once these items are complete, the customer pays any associated fees and staff places their event on the calendar as "active."
Staff often continues to work with the coordinator and answer any questions they may have up to the event. We try not to intervene with an event unless requested by the event coordinator.
On a side note, in January the Parks and Recreation staff will implement a new web-based program that will allow online reservations of park areas and pavilions, along with a web-based calendar that will show all the events in each park so that citizens and visitors will have a virtual menu of which event they want to attend.
