"It's time consuming. You come to school and you practice, but you have to go home and practice, too."

    Karla Villa, 15, sophomore

"I don't think people realize how much we do practice. They think they can do it right off the bat. We practice about 10 hours a week, just scheduled time."

    Brianna Witte, 14, freshman

When the football team has packed up their cleats and the basketball players have cleared the court, the Calhoun High School Sandette Drill Team will still be dancing.

It's a year-round sport for the team of black and gold, which practices mornings and afternoons and even at home.

"When we're not practicing, we try to do community service and do team bonding, so that they're more well-rounded" their director, Megan Strauss, said.

A former Sandette, Strauss, who has coached the team for 10 years, said she hopes each Sandette takes away more than a few dance moves from their time on the team.

"I hope they're learning about life, about being responsible and about being dedicated to something," she said.

This year, 31 girls are seizing that opportunity - more than double the team size two years ago.

Their dance floor may be a little crammed, but the big team is just as much fun for the Sandettes as it is for the audience.

"It's fun to have a lot of girls. We get to meet a lot of girls with a lot of different personalities," Strauss said.

The drill team's co-director, Samantha Judd, is a former Sandette, too.
