Victoria powerlifters Chris Papillion and Preston Turner brought home medals from recent meets.

Turner, a Memorial graduate who is a member of the powerlifting team at the University of Texas, was a member of the U.S. team at the International Powerlifting Federation World Championships in Moose Jaw, Canada.

Turner moved up this year to the junior category (ages 18-22) and competed in the 264-pound weight division.

Turner set a world record and finished first in the bench press with a lift of 683 pounds. Turner finished second in the squat with a lift of 821 pounds and second in the dead lift with a lift of 655 pounds.

All of Turner's lifts were personal best and his total of 2,155 pounds was good for second place. A lifter from Russia won the meet with a total of 2,193.5 pounds.

Papillion, a Stroman graduate, won the 242-pound division at the United States Powerlifting Association's Mr. Olympia Pro Powerlifting Invitational in Las Vegas.

Papillion had a squat of 777 pounds, a bench press of 633 pounds, and a dead lift of 722 pounds.

His total lift of 2,132 pounds was more than 100 pounds better than his closest competitor.

Papillion came up just short in his attempt to set a world record of 706 pounds in the bench press in his weight division.

Papillion will compete at the Fitness Expo at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Jan. 29-30.
