We'd say most people in the Crossroads have heard of the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch. The facility, about four miles south of Yoakum, helps abused, abandoned and neglected youth. Youths ages 5 to 18 are housed and taken care of by this valuable nonprofit that was conceived in 1968 and opened its doors in 1972.
In a world in which the number of abused and abandoned youth is increasing, such facilities are a godsend.
Since its beginnings, Bluebonnet Youth Ranch has grown and has been funded by various events - one of the biggest being the annual Celebrity Pro Am Golf tournament held at the Victoria Country Club.
The tournament is in its 30th year. And one of the entertainers, who has hosted the event the past 20 years, is Red Stegal.
"This is Red Stegal's last year to be our host," said Claud Jacobs, the only Bluebonnet founding member still alive.
"He says he'll keep coming, and it's time for some new blood," Jacobs said.
We praise and thank Stegal for all the years he's hosted the tournament. He has set a high standard with a super lineup of great entertainers over the years.
We asked Jacobs if he had any plans on backing out. "Heavens no," he said. "I'm still doing the work." Jacobs was working on the golf tournament pairings when we caught up with him.
We applaud Jacobs for his years of commitment to the youth ranch.
"What's made the tournament is more than 100 volunteers - many of them firefighters and EMS who take mornings off to help us. They've been driving for us for years," Jacobs said.
Jacobs said the first Bluebonnet Youth Ranch tournament had seven pros and 21 amateurs. "This year, we have 50 celebrities - many of them former Major League baseball players - and 250 golf players," Jacobs said.
"This is beyond all of our expectations," Jacobs said.
Also, entertainers, who have come to help out in past years, keep coming back to the event.
"They say they love it here," Jacobs said.
We admire all the volunteers, entertainers, former and current professional sports players and coaches. You have helped to sustain a good cause. For that, we thank you and encourage the public to attend this fabulous event.
