The University of Houston-Victoria's inability to put together a winning streak was illuminated on the scoreboard at Riverside Stadium.
The University of Texas-Brownsville's line told the tale of a second-game loss and a split of doubleheader on Sunday.
"You can see it up there in the score. It was 2, 1 and a 5 in the first four innings," said UHV coach Terry Puhl. "You can't do that. The pitching has got to be more consistent. When we win, we get good pitching."
The Jaguars (11-19) received a solid performance from Tanner Hamilton in a 4-3 win over the Scorpions (25-17) in the first game.
But the pitching and defense wasn't up to par in an 8-3 loss in the second game.
"Tanner threw a good ball game the first ball game," Pulh said. "We bury ourselves that's our problem. It's too much to dig out of. We're going to score some runs and we had some loud outs in the last game.
"You just can't be giving guys 6, 7, 8 runs to start with, especially in a seven-inning ball game."
Hamilton worked 6 2/3 innings in the first game, scattering six hits and striking out seven, before Clayton Fowler got the last out.
"It's a lot mental," Hamilton said. "You're really got to tell yourself to throw a first-pitch strike and get ahead of the batters. We get ourselves into trouble when we start walking batters and falling behind them and letting guys on base that shouldn't be there."
The Jaguars backed Hamilton with eight hits, including a pair of RBI singles by Orlando Quiroga.
"In order to go deep in games you've got to get ahead of the batters," Hamilton said. "We've got a diminished bullpen with injuries. It's tough. It's just knowing that you've got to do it."
UHV matched UT-Brownsville with nine hits in the second game. But four of the Scorpions' hits went for extra bases, including a three-run home run by Colby Henscey and a solo homer by K.J. Semien.
The Jaguars also committed four errors that led to four unearned runs.
"It comes down to executing pitches," Puhl said. "You're not executing pitches on a consistent basis and you're going to get your brains beat out and that's exactly what we did."
The Jaguars and Scorpions split eight games this season, which will likely be the last since UT-Brownsville is eliminating its baseball program at the end of the season.
"I was happy with the way we were swinging the bats," Puhl said. "We saw four decent guys. They're an improved club. It would have been nice to take 3 of 4."
NOTES: Dr. Jose Chapa was the third-base coach for UHV on Sunday. Chapa used to throw batting practice to Puhl when he played for the Houston Astros.
UHV's Cory Hulsey and UT-Brownsville's Kyle Douglass were ejected after Douglass stole second base in the top of the sixth inning.
The ejection was Hulsey's second of the season and he will be suspended for three games.
"We've had many discussions that's all we can say and it's disappointing," Puhl said. "It's disappointing from a program standpoint and it's just wrong."
The Jaguars will travel to San Antonio on Tuesday to play St. Mary's.
The Rattlers are No. 1 in the NCAA Division II rankings.
The game will be played at Wolff Stadium, home of the San Antonio Missions. The time has yet to be determined.
