Spring is a beautiful time in Texas. But even with the wildflowers in full bloom along the roadsides and greenery flourishing, there are some who see the roadways as an easy place to dump their trash.

That is why Keep Texas Beautiful and the Department of Transportation have teamed up to put on the Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off event every year. This year's event will take place on Saturday.

We are excited to see this program being promoted again this year and we hope members of the community will come out and participate in this effort to clean up our area environment and undo some of the damage done by careless people.

Last year's effort was a huge success, with 75,872 volunteers participating in 848 Trash-Off events across the state. More than 6,000 miles of highway were cleared of litter and debris, totaling nearly 6 million pounds of trash.

We hope to see a similar level of involvement or more this year. And if a trash-off event is registered with Keep Texas Beautiful, clean-up supplies will be provided, including bags, volunteer giveaways, customizable posters and banners.

This is yet another environment clean-up event we are excited to see taking place in this area. There have been beach clean-ups, Adopt a Highway events, even Litter Force superhero visits to schools teaching kids how important it is to keep our environment litter-free. And while it is good to see this issue has such an emphasis in the Crossroads, it is also sad that there must be so many programs to keep our beautiful landscape clean.

Thank you to all the members of the community who are taking responsibility and helping to keep our environment clean. And to any litterbugs out there, please don't trash-up our state anymore.
