Editor's note: The Advocate is profiling candidates in the May 29 primary election. This profile features candidates for the Republican Party nomination for 25th District Attorney. The winner will not have a Democratic Party opponent in the November general election. This offices serves three counties, Lavaca, Gonzales and Guadalupe.

Name: Heather McMinn

Age: 37

City/county of residence: Guadalupe

Occupation: District Attorney for 25th Judicial District of Texas

Political party: Republican

Office Seeking: District Attorney

1. Why do you want to serve in this position?

It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the state of Texas as a district attorney. I want to continue seeking justice for victims and aggressively prosecuting those who break our laws. I want to continue to provide a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. In addition, we have worked hard to forge good working relationships and training programs for law enforcement and I want to continue working to improve training and cooperation between agencies.

2. What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am an experienced prosecutor and as your district attorney I have personally prosecuted capital murder cases, murder cases, sexual assault cases, drug cases, burglary, kidnapping, driving while intoxicated repeat offender and numerous others. I currently supervise 17 employees and carry the Texas peace officers commission for two investigators. I'm an experienced prosecutor dedicated to working with law enforcement to bring justice to the citizens of the 25th Judicial District.

3. If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

As your district attorney, I am proud to have represented and served the citizens of the 25th Judicial District. During my second term I will work closely with law enforcement to address the diverse needs of the changing and growing communities which we serve. We will continue to provide training for our officers and work to improve the efficiency of our office. Further, we will increase the services provided to our victims and work toward maximizing efficiency and reducing costs.

County of Residence: Guadalupe

Occupation: Attorney

Political Party: Republican

Office Seeking: District Attorney 25th Judicial District

1. Why do you want to serve in this position?

I want to serve as your district attorney because the office is broken. Your current district attorney has been unable to ensure that the office performs as intended by the Constitution and the laws of Texas to protect the public, eliminate abuses of the system, and ensure appropriate punishments. I am confident that I can make all necessary improvements without abusing the taxpayers and citizens who rely on the district attorney's office to achieve justice without excessive spending. I am tired of politics as usual. It is time to return to the values on which our nation was based.

2. What qualifies you to serve in this office?

My 28 years of courtroom experience, client counseling and private business ownership qualify me to return honor to our district. I have been in private practice for many years - protecting children and families, as well as defending clients to ensure that the prosecution and law enforcement follow the law and obey the Constitution. I have the management skills to create a work environment where experienced prosecutors will want to stay. I have a strong work ethic, a broad command of the areas of criminal law required for a district attorney, and a firm belief in the United States Constitution.

3. If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I will improve the efficiency of the office, properly evaluate cases presented by law enforcement, obtain appropriate indictments in a timely manner, and ensure that a proper result is achieved. I will thoroughly evaluate applicants to ensure that employee turnover is minimal, compared to the incumbent's loss of nine assistant prosecutors in less than 30 months (more than 100 percent turnover). I will be more productive, compared to the incumbent whose productivity has not significantly increased in spite of a 70 percent budget increase. Government, and government employees, should work for the taxpayer - not the other way around.
