Name: Ann Lopez

City/county of residence: Woodsboro/Refugio County

Occupation: County government

Political party: Democratic

Office Seeking: County Commissioner Precinct 1

1. Why do you want to serve in this position?

I want to serve another term as Refugio County Commissioner in Precinct 1 because learning from constituents, what matters to them and finding answers to their issues, is a joy. Working alongside precinct employees and county colleagues, I understand how county government works, the need for accountability in county finances, and the importance of maintaining county facilities, equipment, and county roads. I want to continue work begun with Refugio County's Memorial Hospital and Community Development Foundation because both impact economic development positively if we have healthy residents and financial stability. I am eager to continue serving the people of Refugio County.

2. What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am Precinct 1's incumbent Refugio County commissioner. I secured grants which provided technical assistance for Memorial Hospital and funding for tire and e-waste collection events. I represented Refugio County on the Coastal Bend Council of Governments, providing input on economic development, housing, transportation, health, and aging issues. I taught, earned my doctorate from The University of Texas-Austin, and was dean (Arts & Sciences and Continuing Education), director of Community College Programs for the State of Texas, and an international educational consultant in Argentina for the InterAmerican Development Bank. I also assisted my parents with their small businesses.

3. If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

The most important thing I can do to effectively serve my constituents is to stay in touch with them, to respond to their concerns and to be as informed, because the better informed I am, the better the decisions I make on their behalf. Thus, I will read information provided to me by the county's auditor, department heads, and committee chairs; read local newspapers and publications provided by the Texas Association of Counties; attend TAC and Texas Department of Transportation meetings, and talk with state and national representatives to keep them informed about issues in Refugio County.
