Clara-Jumi Kang will make her Crossroads debut with the Victoria Symphony's performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor.

"The End of a Dark Era" concert will be 8 p.m. Saturday at the Victoria Fine Arts Center. It will be the last concert of the season.

The orchestra will open the concert by performing Amadeus Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro Overture' and closing with Shostakovich's "Symphony No.10."

Maestro Darryl One said this selection was one of Mozart's most popular pieces that was easy to put together with the Russian composer's work to make for a great season closer.

"Shostakovich is one of the great symphonies of all time and tells a very deep and emotional story," One said, Kang was born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1987 into a musical family. She began playing piano and violin when she was 3 and made her symphony debut two years later.

To pay for her first bow, the musical prodigy modeled cosmetics.

Some of her accolades include winning the Gold Medal at the International Violin Competition and performing at Carnegie Hall.

One said having the violin virtuoso is a perfect compliment to Mozart's most popular overture and it's all happening in Victoria.

"This is one of the greatest violin concertos... and one of the most powerful symphonies ever written," he said.
