Food service inspections

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun Counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.



FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 20

Taqueria La Finca, 2640 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 43. Improper cooling. Employees need to follow proper hand washing procedures. Employee drinks need to have a lid and straw and should be stored below food prep surface. Wash hands and then put on gloves. Ready-to-eat foods must be date-labeled. Keep time of food out at room temperature. Do not thaw raw chicken in the hand sink. Work on getting rid of the flies. Replace damaged utensils. Manager needs to educate employees on proper cooling, hand washing and date labeling. Six facility or equipment violations.

Maya Mexican Restaurant, 1909 N. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 22. Need to wash hands when entering kitchen and between tasks. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Need to use gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods. Need to store raw meat below other food. Fix back door to ensure no insects can come in. Need general cleaning in kitchen. Two facility or equipment violations.

Longbranch Steakhouse LLC, 1000 S. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 15. Need to wash hands before putting on gloves. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Store raw meat below other food in walk-in cooler. One facility or equipment violation.

Drifters Bar and Grill, 2912 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 15. Need to wash hands before putting on gloves. Keep cell phones off the preparation table. Need to use gloves when handling salad. Need to wipe down the shelves behind bar. One facility or equipment violation.

Gary's Drive Inn, 601 W. Main St., Edna. Demerits: 11. Improper cold hold temperature. Need proper ingredient label for candy in the front by register. Deli sandwiches need to be date-labeled with seven-day use-by date. One facility or equipment violation.

Ventura's Tamales, 3907 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 11. Store raw meat below other foods. Work on date-labeling food in the walk-in cooler. Keep food at least 6 inches off the floor in the walk-in cooler and the storage room. One facility or equipment violation.

Mo Betta Cookin', Corner of West Gonzales Street and Alternate 77, Yoakum. Demerits: 9. Use only licensed pest control. Remove the Raid product from the mobile unit. Cannot discharge wastewater on the ground. Have to dispose of wastewater in sanitary sewer or have licensed waste hauler pump the wastewater tank.

Longhorn Ranch Restaurant, 473 S. U.S. Highway 87, Cuero. Demerits: 7. Keep children out of kitchen. One facility or equipment violation.

Whataburger No. 428, 112 E. Houston Highway, Edna. Demerits: 6. Improper cold hold temperature. Two facility or equipment violations.

Cowboy Stadium, 1303 W. Gayle St., Edna. Demerits: 6. Improper cold hold temperature. Thermometer needs to be properly calibrated.

Wingstop, 5208 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 6. Keep hand sink clean and clear. Two facility or equipment violations.

Sno Ball, 102 Tribble St., Yoakum. Demerits: 6. Keep hand sink cleaned out and clear. Pest control should be conducted by licensed pest control only. Two facility or equipment violations.

Frontier Barbecue Inc., 608 N.E. Street, Edna. Demerits: 4. Store raw meat below cooked foods and produce. Improper cold hold temperature.

Meat Center, 3035 Farm-to-Market 822, Edna. Demerits: 4. Date label deli meats with seven-day use-by date. Improper cold hold temperature.

Hopkins Elementary Cafeteria, 110 Hopkins Road, Victoria. Demerits: 4. Keep spray nozzle at least 2 inches above sink when not in use.

Dairy Queen, 802 N. Esplanade St., Cuero; The Green Iguana Grill, 137 E. Main St., Port Lavaca; Dairy Treet, 3808 N. Laurent St., Victoria; Schlotzsky's Deli, 4601 N. Navarro St., Victoria; St. Joseph High School, 110 E. Red River St., Victoria; Stripes No. 7039, 1704 S.W. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 3.

RE-INSPECTIONS

Cuero Country Club, 1305 E. South Railroad St., Cuero, inspected March 26 with 5 demerits. Re-inspected April 17 with the cold hold violation corrected.

Whataburger, 905 N. Esplanade St., Cuero, inspected April 10 with 15 demerits. Re-inspected April 12, drain pipes from hand washing sink and three-compartment sink cleaned out. Sinks are draining. Obtained 2012 permit. Will continue to address the problem with flies.

Dollar General Store No. 11674, 5780 SW Moody St., Victoria, inspected March 6, with 10 demerits. Re-inspected April 11 with violations not being corrected. Hot water not working in restroom. Need thermometer in deli meat cooler. Need 2012 Food Establishment Permit.

Pit Stop, 1501 E. North St., Victoria, inspected Jan. 27 with 20 demerits. Re-inspected April 11, most violations corrected. Hot water working at the two-compartment sink, in restroom and at hand washing sink in front. Need to have cold water working at front sink. Also, need soap and paper towels at front hand-washing sink.

Dragon House, 202 S. Highway 77-A, Yoakum, inspected March 7 with 34 demerits. Re-inspected April 17 with critical violations corrected. Continue to work on controlling flies.

Family Dollar Store No. 2524, 203 W. Gonzales St., Yoakum, inspected Oct. 27 with 12 demerits. Re-inspected April 17 with improper cold hold temperature. No expired medicines found. Need 2012 Food Establishment Permit.

Daniel's Tacos, 902 W. Main St., Edna, inspected April 9 with 16 demerits. Re-inspected April 11, with need to continue addressing critical violations. Improper cold hold temperature.
