Editor's note: The Advocate is profiling candidates in the May 29 primary election. This profile features candidates for the Democratic Party nomination for DeWitt County Commissioner Precinct 1. The winner will face Republican incumbent Curtis Afflerbach in the November general election.

Name: David L. Ruiz

Age: 59

City/county of residence: Cuero, DeWitt County

Occupation: Shop owner, The Red Wiggler Bait & Tackle

Political party: Democratic

Office Seeking: County Commissioner Precinct 1

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I have been involved in county affairs for a number of years now. I have served on several levels of county government, but never in commissioners court. It is time to step up to deal with issues that concern the elderly and sick. There are new monies available to the county since the oil boom in the area. I would like to see some of those funds used within the town on streets that come into town. To make sure those funds do not stop at the city limits.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

When appointed by a governor in 1991 to serve on a grants commission, I served on a regional level. I saw several grants come to DeWitt County as well as other counties in the surrounding areas. I have helped to bring businesses to Cuero, the biggest being the Stevenson prison unit that has created over 300 jobs for our community. I am a student of municipal law, and it would not take me long to learn what is necessary for county government. I have working knowledge and experience with heavy equipment for building and repairing streets. I know that a commissioner's role is not to operate equipment, but to ensure the work is coordinated and completed.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I have always had an open-door policy. Whether someone is in my precinct or not, people know I will do whatever is necessary to get a job done or find a solution to a complaint.

Name: Jimmy Solis

Age: 61

City/county of residence: Cuero/ DeWitt County

Occupation: Civil Maintenance Supervisor

Political party: Democratic

Office Seeking: County Commissioner Precinct 1

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I would like to serve in the position of DeWitt County Commissioner Precinct 1 to become involved in solving problems with the county.

Roads are in need of repair. Ditches, erosion and drainage need to be addressed. The heavy drilling activity that the county is experiencing with heavy equipment, trucks, and overall traffic on a daily basis is taking its toll. I have experience in building and maintaining roads, ditches, and drainage systems. I know what it takes to do the job correctly and look forward to making a difference in the economic development of our county.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have 12 years experience in management in an oilfield company in the drilling fluids division. Also, a supervisor for 21 years in the civil maintenance department at a chemical plant. I know the abuse these county roads take on a daily basis. Building new roads and maintaining roads, ditches, culvert piping and drainage systems is what I do daily. I am hazmat trained and involved in supervising, budgeting and purchasing for projects from start to finish. I believe in doing the job correctly the first time to save money and reduce problems in the future.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

If elected I will work hard for my constituents in DeWitt County. I will be fiscally responsible, maximizing every dollar. I will work closely with the residents addressing their concerns and needs.

I will make sure their voice is heard and concerns are top priority. I will be a very approachable person to everyone, and I will work with the other commissioners to make DeWitt County an even better county for the future.
