Editor's note: The Advocate is profiling candidates in the May 29 primary election. This profile features candidates for the Republican Party nomination for DeWitt County Constable Precinct 2. The winner will not have a Democratic Party opponent in the November general election.

Name: Steven A. Wehlmann Sr.

Age: 58

City/county of residence: Cuero, DeWitt County

Occupation: Constable, Precinct. 2, business owner

Political party: Republican

Office Seeking: Constable, Precinct 2

Why do you want to serve in this position?

It has been my honor and privilege to serve the residents of DeWitt County and the state of Texas as constable for the past seven and a half years. I find it rewarding most of the time and there are times it is not. I shall uphold the statutes and laws of the state of Texas.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have been a peace officer since 2001, graduated from the Victoria College Police Academy as salutatorian. I have more than 200 hours in civil process training from Sam Houston State University, Texas State University and other sources.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

If re-elected, I will continue to effectively serve the civil and criminal process as required by law. When I receive civil citations I try to get them served in two or three days. I have yet to return a citation unserved. Some of my contacts have told me that they don't see me often. This is a part-time position and I usually devote about 20 hours a week to serving citations during the day and patrol at night. I also back up the sheriff's deputies, Cuero Police Department and Cuero Fire Department when possible.

Name: Gerard "Jerry" La Grange

Age: 48

City/county of residence: Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas

Occupation: Law enforcement officer

Political party: Republican

Office Seeking: Constable Precinct 2, DeWitt County

Why do you want to serve in this position?

During my career in law enforcement, I have served as a deputy sheriff, a police patrolman, a bailiff, an instructor, an investigator, a K-9 handler as well as a process server. I feel that I am well qualified to carry out the duties as a constable and I am committed to the position that I seek. I enjoy the responsibility of serving the citizens of DeWitt County and wish to further serve as constable Precinct 2.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have been a full-time law enforcement officer for more than 28 years. During that time, as part of my duties, I have served civil process to include subpoenas and citations and have served as bailiff of the courts. I have attended various classes to keep my certifications as required by the State of Texas and by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I would attend the required training courses to update my education. I would also perform my duties in a professional manner and maintain contact with the general public. I would work closely with the justice of the peace court and ensure that all required duties are performed in an efficient manner.
