This past week we were blessed with a group of youth called the U.M. ARMY, who were junior high school youth of the Methodist church from all over who came to Victoria to do volunteer work for nonprofit organizations and churches.
A group of 12 youth and three sponsors came to help us at the Art League on Tuesday. They worked hard all day and helped us complete many cleaning and landscaping projects that we needed to finish before the first of the month. Their timing was great, and their work was even better.
It is so good to know that there are youth who have a heart for helping others out there. We were blessed by their coming and thank them very much.
Part of what they did was to clean the floor in the classroom where we had laid subflooring to get it leveled for the volunteers from Home Depot to come and lay our new laminate flooring. They should be doing that in the next week or so, and that will be another project completed.
The roof and the windows are next. Know anyone who restores and rebuilds old windows on 100-plus-year-old buildings?
Let me know by contacting the Victoria Art League or call me. We plan to restore our kitchen floor and work on the restrooms next.
We have had a very busy month of July with our classes in photography, pottery and stained glass.
William Vickery will finish his stained glass class this Saturday, and for those of you who missed it, he will offer it again in the future if enough people are interested. So if you missed this one, let us or him know, and we can plan another one. His number is 361-235-2416.
Also Jim Feig will not be teaching digital photography classes in August, but he plans to offer two beginner classes in September, one on Tuesday and another on Thursday. Both will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. One is about filled, so contact Jim if you are interested in one of these classes at 361-576-0578.
I will also be teaching two beginner pottery classes in September on Tuesdays. One will be from 6-9 p.m. for those who work and another from 1-4 p.m.
Also in September, I will teach a follow-up class in pottery on Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. or 6-9 p.m. for those with pottery experience. These classes will start about mid-September. Call 361-575-3216 if interested or for more information.
Michelle Evans has had successful workshops all summer for children, each one for certain ages. Check with her if you are interested in getting your child involved in art. Call her at 361-572-8093.
Our featured artist of the month will be Candace Coyle. Her work will hang in the special display area in our gallery, so come by and see her paintings and the other paintings, pottery and other artwork in our gallery. We will have a reception for her before our next meeting at 2 p.m. Aug. 12. That will be followed by our meeting and demonstration featuring Connie Wittstruck, of Santa Fe, Texas. She will be a demonstration on portraiture in oils.
Come join us for an afternoon of inspiration and enjoyment.
We are here for you, Victoria, whether it is to take advantage of one of our many classes or workshops, need a place to rent a venue that is rich in character and history, see a live artist demonstration, view our gallery or purchase fine art from artists in this area, we welcome you here at the Victoria Art League.
