A Victoria County jury on Friday sentenced a Portland man to prison after finding him guilty of sexual assault of a child, sexual performance of a child, child pornography and online solicitation of a child.

Gabriel Antonio Abrego received four years in prison on two counts of sexual assault of a child and one count of sexual performance of a child, according to a news release from the Victoria County district attorney's office.

He was given probation on two counts of child pornography and three counts of online solicitation of a child.

Evidence presented during the four-day trial showed that Abrego began a texting relationship with a 15-year-old Victoria girl in April 2009. Investigators Angela Martinez and Thurman Marshall, of the Victoria County Sheriff's Office, determined Abrego believed she was 16, according to the news release.

Evidence showed Abrego met with the girl on July 17, 2009 in Victoria, engaged in sexual activity with her and began requesting a second meeting a few days later.

Investigators set up a sting to arrest Abrego when he returned on July 28, 2009, to see the girl. Abrego was arrested that day and officers located three condoms in his pocket as he entered the victim's home, according to the news release.

The case was prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Johna Stallings and Allison Jones Marek, of the Victoria County District Attorney's Office.

Judge Robert C. Cheshire sentenced Abrego on Friday.
