AARP Chapter 829 hosts meeting
AARP Chapter 829-Victoria had its July 31 meeting at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center, 603 E. Murray St.
Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president, presided at the meeting and welcomed everyone. He introduced new member, Bertha Williams to the group and welcomed her to the chapter.
Natalie Gilbert, chaplain, led the invocation, followed by the pledge to the U.S. and Texas flags.
The speaker for the day was Jami Martin, registered dietitian with Citizens Medical Center. She talked about healthy nutrition as we age. She encouraged everyone to eat a variety of colors, noting that fruits and vegetables may help a lot but only if you eat enough on a regular basis. They have many good health benefits if you will eat at least five or more servings each day. She gave each member the cookbook, of "Five Ingredient Meals," with recipes made of healthy ingredients.
Volunteers reported 45 hours of volunteer service in the community.
Happy Birthday was sung to Betty Lott and Frank Lott for their July birthdays.
The raffle for the day was won by Elida Medillin. Reports were heard from Pam Carver, treasurer, and Yvonne Smith, secretary.
After the meeting refreshments were served by Maria Alvarado and Angie Montez during the fellowship hour.
The next meeting will be Aug. 28 and will be presented by Lauren Joiner Hawes, with the Victoria College, on the Lifetime Learning Program at the college.
