Political views were not made clear in story

Editor, the Advocate:

Reading an article in the Advocate on Aug. 4 in which I was "quoted" reminded me that what we hear and interpret and repeat is not always accurate to the original meaning. That is true in the article "Victoria 'kiss-in' act of reconciliation." In reading what I supposedly said, I realize that I did a poor job of expressing my opinions and beliefs to your nice reporter. In replying to the question of what I thought about the whole Chick-fil-A and gay/lesbian uproar, I was quoted (though it is actually a paraphrase of what I said), "I'm just glad that we have people who stand up for what they think is right and that they do it in a lawful, friendly way. They have a right to be here as much as anyone else."

To clarify my thoughts about the matter, I was expressing admiration for Dan Cathy saying what he believes in a kind manner, and I was expressing appreciation for gay/lesbian folks being kind in return. I have gay friends that I care very much about, but that doesn't mean we agree on lifestyles or beliefs of what constitutes marriage.

A cherished freedom here in America is to be able to speak beliefs, religious or otherwise, candidly. We who follow Christ should lead the way in showing kindness to everyone, regardless of differences in moral beliefs or in something as mundane as, say, Daylight Savings Time!
