Advocate-Area Ranked Teams

Class 2A

1. Refugio

14. East Bernard

Class 1A

12. Shiner

14. Ganado

Refugio ended the 2011 season as the No. 1 team in Class 2A, Division II.

The Bobcats will begin the 2012 season as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press' Class 2A preseason high school football poll released Thursday.

Refugio received 17 first-place votes. Division I schools Cameron Yoe, Daingerfield and Newton also received first-place votes and were ranked Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

Lexington, which Refugio has played in the semifinals the last two seasons, was ranked No. 5.

Cisco, which Refugio defeated in last season's state championship game, is ranked No. 7.

Refugio returns six starters on offense and six on defense, including quarterback Travis Quintanilla, running back Draigon Silvas, offensive linemen John Wesley Shipp and Logan Myers and linebacker Jack Gumm.

"We really welcome it," said Refugio coach Jason Herring. "Our kids embrace that. They have a target on their backs anyway so they don't see it as a negative. They see it as a reward for their hard work and all our tradition."

East Bernard, which lost in the Class 2A, Division II regional playoffs last season, was ranked No. 13.

The Brahmas return quarterback/defensive back Ty Slanina, who has committed to TCU.

Shiner was ranked No. 12 and Ganado was No. 14 in the Class 1A poll.

Shiner advanced to the Division I quarterfinals and Ganado made it to the regional round last season.

Corpus Christi Calallen, a district opponent of Victoria East, Victoria West, Calhoun and Beeville, was ranked No. 10 in the Class 4A poll.

The other No. 1 teams were Southlake Carroll in Class 5A, Denton Guyer in 4A, Stephenville in 3A and Mart in Class 1A. La Marque, which like Stephenville dropped from Class 4A to 3A, was ranked No. 2.

Refugio takes the field for the first time Friday night when it travels to Aransas Pass for a scrimmage.

"Of course we know it's not where you start, it's where you finish," Herring said. "But it's where we want to be."
