Business owners have taken baby steps to revitalize downtown. And on Saturday, potential customers will be leaping at the chance to see what they have to offer in the Downtown Victoria Pub Crawl.

Main Street Program organizers would like the inaugural event to create buzz about the city's amenities.

"Downtown is a hidden gem with so much potential," said Sara Rodriguez, interim director.

Those up for the challenge can get their share of the city scene with stops at the 77901 Wine Bar, The Golden Gecko, Downtown Bar & Grill, Greek's 205, Simply Delicious, and Steve-a-reno's. Each restaurant has a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase, some even plan to offer appetizers.

New kid on the block Steven Jaschke said he feels a little pressure serving as the beginning and finishing point. "I like this event, it will help out everybody," he said. Jaschke's blues bar, Steve-a-reno's opened in June.

Jodi Yancey, one of The Golden Gecko owners, said the pub crawl is an ideal opportunity to see familiar faces and meet new ones.

"We've been waiting to this for a while," she said.

Registration, is free, but required. To keep the stakes interesting, participants can utilize the SCVNGR app, that is available on iPhone, iPod Touch and Android phones. One can play via SMS text messages with the keyword vtxpubcrawl to 728647 (SCVNGR).

All the details have not been revealed because it adds a surprise element while keeping the game fair. Rodriguez said the competition is not a timed race and people will be rated on accuracy. Winners will receive a prize.

Rodriguez said the technologically-advanced challenge is a way to get members of the community engaged. She's optimistic that customers will continue develop a relationship with the businesses.

"It's like Mayberry, you want to go into places with a down-home feeling," she said.
