Victoria man wins $12,000 in scratch-off game

Clyde Jones holds his scratch-off ticket up to the City Motors banner to reveal his $12,000 winning number. More than 15,000 mailers were sent out in the Crossroads yesterday, and Jones has already claimed the grand prize.

When Clyde Jones walked into City Motors on Thursday with a "winning" scratch-off promotional mailer, he expected to win the dealership's $2 gold coin prize.

What he won was $12,000.

"I'm still shaking," said Jones, a retired radiation therapist. "I was not expecting to win."

Jones displayed his scratch off ticket to City Motors salesman, Nick Villarreal, who realized Jones' scratch-off number - No. 20985 - was an unusual number.

"I thought this isn't the same number I've been seeing all day," Villarreal said.

Jones received the scratch-off mailer Wednesday, and immediately checked to see if he was a winner.

He said he once won a fishing boat from a car company in the 1980s, so he always plays the games on the promotional mailers.

City Motors signed over a check for $12,000 to Jones and congratulated him on his win.

There were 15,000 mailers that were sent out around the Crossroads, and many prizes remain unclaimed, including a flat screen TV, and various cash prizes, ranging from $2 to $1,000.

Jones said he plans to use the money to pay off bills, and possibly take a vacation to Washington, D.C.

"Don't throw away the mailers because you never know if you're going to be a winner," he said. "All I can do is thank the good Lord."
