DISTRICT 15-2A, D-I: Goliad positive about new district
John Mares knew the first order of business when he was promoted from an assistant to the head football coach at Goliad was creating a different mind set.
The Tigers went 2-8 last year, their seventh consecutive season to finish with a losing record.
But the disappointment was tempered when Goliad dropped from Class 3A to Class 2A, Division I in the University Interscholastic League's reclassification and realignment.
The Tigers should be in the mix for their first playoff appearance since 2008.
"It's definitely a positive," Mares said. "Of course the expectations are a step up. The one thing we're pushing is a positive attitude. We want to build on that. When you haven't won, you've got to feel like you can win. The kids are excited."
Mares knows winning won't be automatic in District 15-2A. Goliad opened last season with a 42-26 win over district foe San Antonio Cole, but dropped a 21-6 decision to district member George West the next week.
"It's a learning situation, but everyday we're getting better," he said. "We're working a lot on fundamentals. We went from no backs to running backs. The defense is new. We're getting back to where we were at."
Mares credits the coaching staff with easing the transition to a new offense and defense.
"We have a new offensive and defensive coordinator and we moved a lot of coaches around," he said. "The whole staff has done a great job. The consistency they bring builds right in there with what we're trying to do with the kids."
