Editor's note: This is the second in an ongoing series looking at the Crossroads region's top taxpayers.

It got its start in 1980, when construction first began at the Point Comfort site, and grew through the years, adding acreage and employees.

It's Formosa Plastics Corp. Texas. And today, with its more than $1 billion in taxable value, it tops the list as Calhoun County's top taxpayer.

Not only that, but it makes that list a whopping three times.

The plastic resins producer employs about 1,700 full-time employees and about 550 full-time contract employees at its Point Comfort site, Bill Harvey, a company spokesman, said in an email. Annual payroll comes in at more than $130 million.

The company's work spans beyond what happens inside the plant, however.

Formosa has established five trust funds - the Environmental Trust, Religious Trust, CCISD Scholarship Trust, Memorial Medical Center Trust and Edna School Trust - with a total endowment of $4 million, Harvey said in his email, and the company also developed more than 200 acres of farmland into a wetland preserve and classroom for hands-on learning.

Other community events include annual fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and Habitat for Humanity, as well as the Formosa Charity Golf Tournament which, in October, brought in more than $79,000 for United Way of Calhoun and Victoria Counties.

And Formosa continues to grow.

The plant announced an upcoming $2 billion expansion estimated to employ another 250 full-time workers.
