Salute: Victoria native promoted to major in Air Force

Maj. Lupe Gutierrez was recently promoted to the rank of major and changed duty stations from Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, to Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
He joined the Air Force as an enlisted member in 1989 after graduating from Victoria High School in 1987. Gutierrez attended ITT Technical Institute, attaining an associate degree in electronics technology in 1989 and attended Wayland Baptist University, where he attained a bachelor's degree in occupational education in 2002 and a master's degree in human resource management in 2011. Gutierrez was commissioned as an officer in June 2002 via the Air Force Officer Training School and became a munitions maintenance officer. He has deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and his medals include the meritorious and commendation medals as well as the NATO medal.
Gutierrez is the son of Frank R. Gutierrez and Ramona Gutierrez, both of Victoria. He is married to Georgia Villarreal Gutierrez and has two sons, Lupe Ian Gutierrez Jr. and Christian Xavier Gutierrez, of Austin.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Scott A. Smejkal has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Smejkal is a platoon sergeant assigned to the 716th Explosive Ordnance Detachment, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
He is the son of Gary and Tanya Smejkal, of Victoria. His wife, Sara, is the daughter of John and Nancy Burkhart IV, of Victoria. He is a 1994 graduate of Stroman High School.
