Citizens Medical Center's Level III designated trauma center was named Trauma Center of the Year at the Nov. 13 Texas EMS Conference Awards Luncheon.

The award goes to the Texas designated trauma facility that has shown leadership and high standards in implementing injury prevention programs and providing trauma patient care, according to a Citizens news release.

That recognition was an honor for the entire trauma team, said Dr. Steve Hougen, the hospital's trauma medical director.

"When the ambulance sirens are wailing in the middle of the night, the Victoria community should be comforted to know that our trauma program has received this state recognition for excellence," he said in the release.

Hougen has worked alongside Carolyn Knox, the hospital's trauma manager, since the trauma program began in 2003. Citizens initially received trauma center designation in 2004.

Since then, the program's performance improvement scores have been recognized as "phenomenal" by Jane Guerrero, director of trauma and EMS systems for the Department of State Health Services.

Citizens received no deficiencies and 99 percent loop closure during their last survey in October.

Citizens CEO David P. Brown, in the news release, congratulated the medical staff for their participation and support of the trauma program.

"The Crossroads area is lucky to have these dedicated professionals serving them," he said.

Upon accepting the Trauma Center of the Year award, Knox acknowledged the dedication of the medical staff, hospital staff and support from hospital leadership.
