Brenda Tally does not know what a year without "The Nutcracker" would be like.
The Victoria Ballet Theatre's artistic director still remembers the first production of the ballet in 1985 - at the time she was only 9 years old. On Thursday, she will add yet another performance to her exhaustive list.
"The production quality and costumes get better," said Tally, who has overseen three previous productions as artistic director. "It's been great. Every year we have more participation, and it enhances the whole thing."
In 2002, the production received a major facelift with a new set, and since then, the production has become stronger and better.
But that's not the full reason people keep coming, Tally said. The magic of the Christmas festive performance has become a tradition for Crossroads residents.
"It's really a universal Christmas tradition," she said. "I'm really proud. This is the biggest production we've done yet."
This year's performance has more than 200 people.
The story, of course, stays the same, but the quality, she said, should captivate the audience even more.
"Every year, it's a little different," she said. "It gets bigger. It gets better. It's a really beautiful production."
