College Q&A: UHV collects donations for 10th annual Giving Tree
I am looking for an opportunity to give back to those less fortunate during the holiday season. Does the University of Houston-Victoria have any opportunities?
The holiday season is a good time to give back to the community. For the 10th year, the UHV Student Government Association is doing just that by organizing the Giving Tree donation drive for five area charities.
The Student Government Association uses the Giving Tree as a way to show it cares about the Victoria community and area nonprofits. The association strives to help the greater good, which is why the Giving Tree is a significant event for the organization each year, said Jena West, president of the UHV Student Government Association.
The charities benefiting from the Giving Tree are diverse, allowing community members the opportunity to give a variety of items to stray animals and every age group. The charities benefiting are Adopt-A-Pet, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed), Mid-Coast Family Services and the Old Landmark Committee of Victoria.
Each charity has a wish list. Some of the items requested are toys for children of all ages, household items like towels and alarm clocks and clothing for children and adults. The charities also need everyday items like toiletries, canned food, school supplies and dog food. A full list of specific items needed is available online at uhv.edu/president/special_events/tree.aspx or at UHV in the University Center foyer and University West Student Services, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
Community members and UHV faculty, staff and students can drop off unwrapped items under the Giving Tree in the University Center foyer from now until Dec. 14. Building hours for donation drop-off are 1-9 p.m. Sunday, 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday.
After Dec. 14, the Student Government Association members will divide the donated items and make arrangements to deliver the donations to each charity.
