As I travel across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence," it is clearly evident that exceptional opportunities for our students are developing daily.
On Dec. 1, we had the Elementary School University Interscholastic League Meet at West High School. It was truly an amazing event. As many as 421 VISD elementary students competed in subject areas including art, dictionary skills, maps, charts and graphs, number sense, oral reading, spelling, social studies and storytelling. As our elementary students entered the high school classrooms to compete in their subject category, they were greeted by words of encouragement placed on the blackboards by the high school students. This act of kindness was truly appreciated by all. We would like to thank West High School, Mrs. Deborah Crick and Diana Rigamonti for all their support, all of our 121 volunteers who made the event so special and Lisa Baughman, assistant principal at Crain Elementary School, for all her efforts in overseeing the entire event. We truly appreciate their excellence.
Later that evening, many of our VISD schools and organizations participated in the annual Victoria Christmas Parade. It was a magical evening with more than 40 representatives of the VISD spreading the "holiday cheer" throughout our downtown streets. We are so proud to be represented by such outstanding entries, and we would like to thank our float and entry participants for representing our school district with pride and prominence.
We are extremely proud to announce that four Victoria ISD students have been recognized in advanced levels by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Victoria East student Melissa Clark for being named as a semifinalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Competition. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Melissa. Only 16,000 semifinalists are named across the entire United States. As a semifinalist, Melissa has an opportunity to be named a Merit Finalist in February and to be included as a possible recipient of one of 8,300 national scholarships. We are also proud to announce that Victoria East student Steven Lin and Victoria West students Joshua Bednorz and Christobal Saenz were selected to the Commended List. Commended students placed in the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition. Students on the Commended List show exceptional academic promise in the areas of critical reading, mathematics and writing.
We are also proud to announce that Victoria Center for Advanced Learning students Aaron Zapalac, David Bengtson, Robert Barrera and Ruben Cavazos recently attended the Texas A&M FADE Engineering competition and received the "Impressive Design Ingenuity Award" for their project.
As you can see, the power of our school district relies on the power of our people. Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire school district, we would like to thank our community for all that you "give" and for your continued support of "Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day."
