Will the city's Solid Waste Department pick up extra holiday trash and recycling after Christmas? Can you please provide a collection schedule for the holidays?
Yes, extra trash will be collected after Christmas. Extra garbage will be picked up from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, but no yard waste or brush will be collected during this timeframe. Residents are asked to place extra holiday trash in plastic bags, boxes or old trash cans at least five feet away from the automated cart by 7 a.m. Yard waste/brush collection will resume Jan. 3.
During the week of Christmas, residential trash collection and curbside recycling collection will be picked up as scheduled Dec. 24. Residents with Tuesday garbage collection will have their garbage picked up Dec. 26. Residents with recycling collection Dec. 25 will have their recycling picked up Dec. 29. Recycling carts should be placed by the curb by 7 a.m.
If your recycling collection is Dec. 26, please place all trash/recycling carts and/or additional trash cans a minimum of five feet apart from each other with carts placed by the curb by 7 a.m.
The city will not be picking up extra recycling the week following Christmas. However, extra recycling can be taken to the Waste Management Recycling Center located at 809 N. George Street. The recycling center will be closed Christmas Day but is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those using the center must be a city of Victoria resident with a current driver's license and must bring a copy of a city utility bill for verification.
If you have a live Christmas tree that you need to dispose of, the city will begin picking up Christmas trees beginning Jan. 7. Only live trees are collected. The stand and all lights and decorations must be removed.

When is the next Civilian Police Academy, and what are the requirements to participate?
The Victoria Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Civilian Police Academy class, No. 34, scheduled to begin Feb. 5. The 11-week long class is held Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m.
This is your chance to learn all about the Victoria Police Department without actually becoming an officer. The hands-on class features demonstrations from the K-9 Unit and SWAT Team, practical exercises in traffic stops, building searches, fingerprinting, deadly force and a full hands-on class on firearms safety and weapons handling, in addition to much, much more.
The class is absolutely free. If you're accepted, all you will pay for is a class T-shirt. Each year, the class is funded by businesses and individual sponsors.
The deadline to apply for the class is Dec. 28. The class is limited to the first 20 participants with an approved background check. Participants must be 18 or older.
Applications are available online at VictoriaPD.com. Completed applications can be submitted to the Crime Prevention Unit, located next to Sears at the Victoria Mall.
