The DeWitt County Commissioners Court has ordered a burn ban in the unincorporated areas of the county.
The ban that went into effect Tuesday is for 90 days or until rescinded by the court or the county judge, according to the order approved Monday.
Violating the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine. The county will also seek restitution for the fire call.
There are exceptions to the order for commercial contractors or landowners burning brush piles.
Burning is allowed in screen-covered containers with a 1/2 inch or smaller openings.
