It was a feeling of restlessness and compassion that led Sheryl Murphy to contact her son's high school principal Sunday afternoon.
"When you see something so terrible happen to children, you feel so helpless," the mother said. "You want to do something about it."
Friday's mass shooting of 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., shook Murphy into wanting to do something to remember the victims and their families.
Murphy has committed to a prayer service much like See You at the Pole on Thursday morning before classes start at Victoria West High School.
"We need to let our students and teachers know we care," Murphy said. "They are responsible for those children's lives five days out of the week."
The shooting struck a particularly sensitive chord for Murphy because of how close the victims were in age to her 6-year-old granddaughter.
Murphy said she encourages community members to take at least 15 to 20 minutes to pray for the victims of the elementary school shooting.
"If you can't make it to ours, just go to the nearest school and pray at the pole," Murphy said. "Prayer can't hurt."
