An 18-year-old Victoria man was sentenced to seven years in prison Monday.

Raymond James Yancey pleaded guilty last week to aggravated sexual assault of a child younger than 14.

A parent walked in on the abuse Oct. 10, 2011, and then reported it, District Attorney Stephen Tyler said. Tyler said the abuse had gone on for years.

"The defendant was finding himself sexually and finding his own sexual identity, and he used the victim who happened to be available," Tyler said.

Defense Attorney Keith Weiser did not agree with that statement. He said it was his client's decision to plead guilty, and Monday's sentencing hearing only dealt with the punishment.

He said he put witnesses on the stand to testify about Yancey's character.

"We put on some teachers from the high school saying he was very creative and very talented," Weiser said of Yancey's involvement with his school's theater.

He said the sentence was appropriate.

Assistant District Attorney Johna Stallings prosecuted the case.
