Foul mystery odor permeates Victoria

Victoria residents and visitors were assaulted Friday by the stench of manure all across town.

Maria Pulido, who lives west of town, said she came into Victoria to run errands and encountered the smell at every stop.

"I had several stops to make and when I made the first stop, I was like, 'Oh my God,' and I remember checking my shoes and thinking, 'Well good, it's not me,'" Pulido said. "At my second stop, when I still smelled it, I checked the car. I thought we must have stepped in it and it's in the car, but I couldn't find anything."

Pulido said she didn't realize it was all over town until she talked to her sister-in-law, who had also been smelling the dog poop-like odor.

Jimmy Roach, deputy director of public works, said the smell was not coming from the waste water collection system, as several concerned callers asked Friday morning.

Multiple Facebook posts attributed the smell to fertilization of fields in the Inez area, but no officials were able to verify that claim on Friday.

Peter McGuill, Victoria County AgriLife Extension agent, said people have to be very close to the source to smell manure, even with the winds.

"Some of the organic rice farmers who are fertilizing, they are using chicken manure as a fertilizer source. They are also using that on pastureland, but I don't know of any right around Victoria here," McGuill said.

Pulido said she was glad when the smell seemed to disappear as suddenly as it appeared, about 3 p.m.

"Living out in the country, you are used to smells but not in the middle of town," she said. "You are just like, 'What is this?'"
