Volunteer tax preparers are needed to file electronic federal tax returns for people or families who earned $50,000 or less in 2012.

The free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program - sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service - is being offered for the first time in Victoria.

It is also supported by the Victoria Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coalition, consisting of the Victoria County United Way, Community Action Committee of Victoria, Area Agency on Aging, Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent, Victoria College, Wells Fargo and the city of Victoria.

Vicki Smith, executive director of the Community Action Committee of Victoria, said the program not only provides a much-needed free service but will also offer financial education and asset building for families to become more self-sufficient.

"In addition, an increase in earned income tax credits combined with the other benefits of the VITA program will result in more spending in Victoria County," she said.

Volunteers do not need to be tax experts, but only need to possess a willingness to learn. Volunteers are required to have basic computer skills and enjoy helping others. There are no age requirements to volunteer.

Tax law and software training is free and will be provided from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Jan. 10 and 11 and from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

All training sessions will be at Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent, 120 S. Main St.

In addition to tax preparers, volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters during the tax preparation sessions. A short training session will be conducted for greeters Jan. 12.
