ABEL GARCIA, BOWLING :: Left-hander Steve Zeplin blasted the pins to earn the high series honors for the week, while competing in the Sugar & Spice League.

He posted scores of 203, 244, and 268 to total 715 for the night.

Another lefty, Jamar Bryant, rolled the second high total with a 258 high game contributing towards a 703 set.

Other nice scores for the men were Glenn Mason (247-696/675), Mike Stacy (269-694), Ben Mooney (252-681), Shawn Miller (671), Steve Dickinson (670/666), Randy Vivero (669), Mike Osterson (257-660), Joe Wittenburg (656), Michael Conchola (655), Javier Hernandez Sr. (649), Joe Simmons (268), Justin Tweedle (266), Alfred Hempel (264), Charles Aiken (263), John Figueroa (258), Frank Suniga (256) and senior bowler Ray Nickel (247).

Trudy Wortham started Sugar & Spice competition very strong with games of 221 and 244 before losing her line to finish with a 172 game. Her 637 series was high for the women.

Lori Heil matched the 600 mark with an even 600 total for second high.

Delores Stroud, with a 580 set, and Denise Gabrysch, with a 241 individual game, also scored well.

Vera Cruz Restaurant bowlers for the week were Jeremy Bateman (743) and Trudy Wortham (724), both from the Sugar & Spice League.

Congratulations to Javier Hernandez Sr. for breaking the bank at Century Lanes to win a nice $1,680 pot.

Sunday's televised match finals in the USBC Masters was exciting to watch with a clutch performance by Mike Fagan to win his first Major PBA title.

In the opening match, Bryon Smith defeated Dan MacLelland 251-212. Smith fell behind after leaving a big four split in the third frame before roaring back to win the match.

Mike Fagan defeated Smith 228 to 180 in the second match after Smith lost his line to the pocket.

In the final match, Fagan faced tournament leader Chris Barnes.

Barnes was hoping to be the third player to win the PBA Grand Slam, which consists of winning the four majors, the PBA World Championship, the Tournament of Champions, the U.S. Open, and the USBC Masters.

Only Mike Aulby and Norm Duke have accomplished this feat.

After falling 30 pins behind early because of a split in the first frame and no carry of the 10 pin, Fagan made the adjustment to start striking and finished strong for a 246-213 victory over Barnes.

An eighth frame split by Barnes was the chink that started his downfall.

Sunday, ESPN will televise the Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational starting at 3 p.m. locally.

For local bowlers, a reminder the deadline for the Victoria Women's City Tournament entry forms is Friday, Feb. 10, and the VUSBC Open is March 9.
