East junior forward Sonya Acuna passes the ball through the arms of Gregory-Portland senior Candace Walls on Tuesday.

Victoria East coach Yulonda-Wimbish North has been through an extremely trying time.

Her father died Thursday and was buried on Monday, causing her to miss practice and attend to family matters.

The Titans gave their coach a lift Tuesday night at the East gym, running off with a 75-38 win over Gregory-Portland.

"I tell the girls when you get on the court, you leave everything behind," Wimbish-North said. "You can pick it up when it's over. It's been a tough week, and I haven't been around. But I'm fortunate to have coach (Mike) Smith here for me. He's such a great help."

No. 11 East (33-2) improved to 8-0 in district and can clinch the district championship outright with a win at No. 12 Floresville on Friday night.

"I think our defense is back to what it was," Wimbish-North said. "As coaches when we get mad, we tend to want to work them more. But we gave them some rest and I think you could see that tonight."

The Titans put the Lady Cats (3-5) away quickly, outscoring them 28-4 in the first quarter. Gregory-Portland did not make a field goal the entire quarter.

"We were just prepared to play," said East post Kenya Griffin. "We were just getting after it. We stopped chasing and started controlling the dribbler. That's what coach wants us to do, and that's what we did."

Griffin had eight of her 13 points in the first quarter. She was joined in double figures by Adelaide Wenzel, who had 18 points, including three 3-pointers, Danielle Franklin, who had 14 points, and Julia Stastny, who had 13 points.

"I guess we're starting to get ready for the playoffs," Griffin said.

Wimbish-North knows it will take a similar effort for the Titans to gain another win against Floresville.

"They're so physical and so good," she said. "They've been beating people bad. It will be a tough game."
