A meeting to share and discuss ideas about what Matagorda County should look like for future generations will be held at the Bay City Civic Center.

The information from the meeting will help set goals and priorities for the Houston Galveston Regional plan, said D.C. Dunham, executive director for Bay City Community Development Corporation.

“It is an important opportunity to explore ways to strengthen our most significant resources like clean air, water and good jobs,” she said.

Other resources include affordable housing, transportation choices and open spaces and parks.

Dunham said public engagement will be critical to the entire planning process, beginning with the public vision sessions.

The 13-county area includes Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Harris, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller, and Wharton Counties.

Dunham said the public meetings called community visioning sessions are part of a three year plan that include surveys and online forums where people can provide feedback.

An important goal of the planning process is to make sure that the plan reflects ideas from Matagorda County, she said.

“These sessions will offer residents an opportunity to learn about issues in their community and feature interactive exercises,” she added.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council and a consortium of community partners received a $.37 million Sustainable Community Regional Planning Grant to develop a regional plan for sustainable development for the 13-county Texas Gulf Coast Planning Region. The plan for sustainable development will be a high-level, long-range plan for enhancing the region’s quality of life and economic opportunity for residents.

This partnership is being led by a partnership which brings EPA, HUD, USDA and DOT together to ensure that the agencies policies, programs and funding consider affordable housing, transportation and environmental protection together.
