About 2,100 customers lost power for an hour Wednesday night when a lightning arrestor failed.
The device is at U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 87.
The outage occurred at 7:13 p.m. and power was restored at 8:20 p.m., said Elgin Janssen, American Electric Power spokesman.
The lightning arrestor is on a circuit that feeds from the electric substation on the Houston Highway at Ben Jordan Street, Janssen explained.
The circuit tracks along and on both sides of Ben Jordan Street, then turns southeast at the Port Lavaca Highway. From there it proceeds toward Guadalupe Street.
It also feeds along U.S. Highway 59 southwest and turns toward Bloomington at state Highway 185, Janssen said.
A lightning arrester is used to protect the insulation on electrical power systems from the damaging effect of lightning.
Janssen said there was no lightning strike, but that the equipment failed due to use and exposure over time.
