AARP Chapter 829-Victoria had their Jan. 31 meeting at 1 p.m. at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center on Murray Street.
Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president, presided at the meeting. Chaplain Natalie Gilbert led the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag and the Texas flag. Members reported 107 hours of volunteer service in the community for the months of December and January.
James Spear reported that he had completed an AARP Safe Driving class in January and that if anyone wanted to take the class, to contact him at 361-573-6427 for more information.
Volunteers are helping with the AARP Tax Aide Income Tax Filing Service again this year at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center, 603 E. Murray St., on Mondays and Fridays until April 15.
Marla S. Turner, associate state director for AARP-Houston, presented the program for the day. She conducted the AARP Chapter Leadership Orientation and Training. She informed the group of the duties of the officers, board of directors and committee members. She answered questions from members in regards to the goals of AARP. Turner told the group that one of the goals for AARP in 2012 is to look at the problems with long-term care that the elderly faces, and to see what can be done to ease this problem. She told the group that it is no longer required that AARP members be age 50 or older; anyone can be a member of AARP at age 18.
The next meeting will be Feb. 28. Sheriff T. Michael O'Connor will be the speaker.
