Fred Mease believes in expecting the unexpected.
The Victoria East and Victoria West head wrestling coach understands his athletes will be tested by very talented opponents at the District 30-5A meet.
But he also knows the favorites do not always emerge victorious, and he hopes to have the opportunity to prove it once the action gets under way Saturday morning at the Corpus Christi King gymnasium.
"Three teams will probably compete for the team title - King, the host team, Corpus Christi Ray and Beeville," the coach said. "I'm hoping, especially for the (West) girls, to run into some of their good wrestlers and us being able to knock some of them off.
"I always tell these kids that there are upsets. It happens every year."
In all, the two-team coach has 21 wrestlers who could potentially advance to regionals by finishing either first or second at the eight-team meet. The Titans do not have any girls competing but will field nine boys, while the Warriors have six girls and six boys competing.
Some of the local talent highlighting the field will be East seniors Michael Pena and 195-pounder Travis Barr, who are each seeded second in their respective weight classes, West sophomore Paige Cano and West senior Morgan Moses, a 110-pounder.
On the boys' side, West junior Clay Mullins (126 pounds) is the veteran of the team.
Moses is a No. 1 seed, while Pena - a 115-pounder - and 148-pounder Cano each advanced to regionals last season.
And the coach has seen positive progression from all his wrestlers throughout the season.
"They definitely improved, not only skill wise, but in conditioning and maturity wise also," Mease said. "So, I've definitely got a good feeling with regard to their progress."
Also attending the double-elimination meet will be Corpus Christi Carroll, Corpus Christi Moody and Robstown.
The weigh-in begins at 8 a.m. with matches following at 9 a.m.
