LIONS EYE BANK OF TEXAS
Local Lions clubs are rolling out the fun Feb. 11 with a Bowl-A-Thon at Century Lanes, 3401 John Stockbauer Drive.
The fundraiser is for the Lions Eye Bank of Texas at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
The event, sponsored jointly by the Victoria Boulevard Lions Club and the Victoria Lions Club, begins at 1 p.m. Registration starts at noon.
Teams of four bowlers can register for a minimum $120 donation to the Lions Eyes Bank of Texas. Individuals can take part for a $30 donation and will be assigned to a team.
Trophies will be awarded for the highest team score and individual man's and woman's scores.
The team bringing in the most donations will earn a $100 cash prize.
The Lions Eye Bank of Texas was founded in 1953 by Baylor University and the Lions Clubs of the Texas Gulf Coast.
It provides ocular tissues to surgeons across the United States and throughout North and South America.
The Lions clubs have long been supporters of sight-related projects, including recycling eyeglasses, vision screenings and providing treatment for those at risk at losing their vision.
In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."
Lions accepted Keller's challenge then and continue that work today.
The Bowl-A-Thon is an opportunity to help the Lions continue that work.
