Saturday is "2-1-1 Day" in Texas.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has declared Feb. 11 as the day to educate residents about 2-1-1, the free phone number that connects callers with services in their community that can improve their health and quality of life, according to a news release from the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission.
"We're dedicating this day to letting the Golden Crescent area residents know that 2-1-1 is the number to call when they don't know who to call," said Joe Brannan, executive director of the planning commission. "When you dial 2-1-1, a trained expert will listen to your needs and provide anonymous referrals to local community resources that can help with everything from finding food, housing, and childcare to crisis counseling or substance abuse treatment."
In 2011, 2-1-1 Texas received more than 3.4 million calls. More than 24,000 of those calls were from the Golden Crescent region and the number is expected to increase in 2012.
The Golden Crescent 2-1-1 region is celebrating by having 2-1-1 Day proclamations signed by regional mayors designating Feb. 11 as 2-1-1 Day.
