GAME 1
W: Bergstrom; L: Rodriguez
W: Wagener,
L: Trinidad
A dip in temperatures couldn't stop the hot-hitting University of Houston-Victoria bats on Sunday.
The Jaguars opened the regular season with a two-game sweep of Huston-Tillotson at the O'Connor Athletic Complex on Sunday, winning the first game 10-2, followed by a 6-0 shutout in Game 2.
"We prepare for every game like it's going to be either 100 degrees or 30, like it was today," said UHV coach Keri Lambeth.
Kellie King and Porsha Ramos combined for five RBIs in Game 1, while Baylea Wagener pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the second half of the doubleheader.
"I was just ready to play, I wasn't worried about the weather," Ramos said.
Last year, UHV ace Emily Bergstrom pitched a perfect game against the Rams in Austin. In Game 1, it was apparent she would have another great game against the Rams.
Bergstrom struck out three of the first four batters of the game and pitched four no-hit innings against the Rams.
After facing Rams Game 1 starter Roxanne Rodriguez once in the order without a hit, the UHV bats came around starting in the third inning.
Pinch hitter Marley Moehrig got the Jaguars on the board with an RBI double to right-center field that brought in the first two UHV runs/
Ramos brought Moehrig home with an RBI single. Although the Rams cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Ramos added another two RBIs as the Jaguars answered with six runs in the home half of the inning.
UHV infielder Kellie King capped the inning with the first home run of the season. King's shot to right field scored two runs.
"It's just like practice, the more at bats you get, the better you get," said Lambeth about the Jaguars offense in Game 1.
Ashley Shannon's sac fly in the sixth made it 10-2 as Game 1 was called on account of the eight-run mercy rule.
The wait period between games saw the temperature dip into the high 30s and a drizzle during the first few innings of Game 2. The circumstances gave Wagener added motivation to retiring the Rams.
"I just tried to get out of there as quick as possible so I could get to the dugout and put my gloves on," Wagner said.
Although Wagener said her fingers got numb in the cold, she left Huston-Tillotson bats senseless in Game 2.
Wagener scattered two hits while striking out five batters and walking only two Rams.
"We're expecting great things from our entire pitching staff," Lambeth said.
Unlike the first game, the Jaguars offense put up run support quickly in Game 2.
After King brought in Ramos with a single to right field, designated player Tara Williams scored on a throwing error in the sequence to put UHV up 2-0 after the first inning.
"It takes a lot of pressure off," Wagener said. "You don't have to sit there and worry. It's a lot easier to pitch."
Williams added two RBI of her own in the fourth inning.
Defensively, shortstop Brittany Arredondo made sure the scoreboard stayed blank by robbing Rodriguez and Keila Watson of hits in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the sixth, Arredando caught a fly ball off the bat of Debra Martinez then alertly threw to third where King tagged out Courtney Hendon.
"She is the heart of our infield right now," Lambeth said.
Arredando and Ramos added RBI in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.
The Jaguars return to action on Friday when they host the UHV Invitational. Huston-Tillotson, Texas Lutheran and Our Lady of the Lake will participate in the two-day tournament.
