A Victoria Fire Department firefighter injured in a rappelling training exercise Tuesday continues to improve in a local hospital.
"I visited him last night at the hospital and spoke with him on the phone this morning," said Fire Chief Taner Drake. "He is in good spirits and ready to begin the recovery process."
The firefighter fell about 30 feet while rappelling down the side of a building as part of a re-certification exercise for members of the High Angle Rescue Team.
He was treated immediately by other firefighters present, then rushed to DeTar Hospital Navarro.
An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident.
The city declined to identify the firefighter.
