Eliseo Olvera Jr., right, is a University of Houston-Victoria student who mentors Patti Welder Middle School student Ariel Valenzuela, left.

The Victoria Business and Education Coalition is honoring mentors who donate their time to work with students in Victoria schools as part of the Sure B.E.T program.

This week's spotlight mentor is Eliseo Olvera Jr., a UHV student who mentors and tutors a student at Patti Welder Middle School.

What made you decide to be a mentor?

When I was younger, I had mentors in my school who would help me out my junior and senior year in high school. If it was not for them, I probably would not be here in University of Houston-Victoria or any university. I want to help others like they helped me.

What do you feel you bring to the student?

I feel I bring comfort to the student because I can relate since I am only a few years older. I could understand them a bit more than older mentors, so the students can open up more to me and not be shy about what they're having problems with academically.
