The second company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will perform at the Leo J. Welder Center for Performing Arts 8 p.m. Friday.

It has been close to five years since the New York City-based dance company last visited the Crossroads.

Victoria Ballet Theatre's Artistic Director Brenda Tally couldn't be more excited.

"It's a great opportunity for our dancers and the community to see their performance," she said.

The New York City-based dance company was founded in 1958 by the late Alvin Ailey.

Ailey, a Central Texas native, wanted to create an experience for the audience.

"I believe dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people," he was quoted as saying in a news release.

Ailey was best known for popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in modern dance.

Twelve dancers will take center stage at the performing arts center to perform a variety of routines.

"Boulevard" is a more athletic, contemporary piece that deals with cultural exchanges.

The "Revelations" scene has been a part of the company for the last 52 years that celebrates African-American heritage.

"It is a movement," said Troy Powell, artistic director designate.

Powell said the dances are real life stories that are relatable to everyone.

The Harlem native, Powell said the audience will be entertained and informed.

"They will leave the theater with a valuble new perspective," he said.
