Leaders at Faith Family Church E3 (encounter, envision, equipped) youth group led students in prayer during their regularly scheduled Wednesday night session after Pastor Josh Joines addressed the death of Matthew Spann, 15. Matthew's organs were donated Wednesday.

Matthew Spann's family mourned his death Wednesday, and they decided to donate many of his organs to help others have a better chance at life.

A spokeswoman for Christus Spohn Memorial in Corpus Christi confirmed the 15-year-old had died and that his organs were donated.

Matthew was shot Monday in what authorities have ruled in their preliminary findings as an accidental shooting. However, the investigation is ongoing.

Family and friends on Wednesday continued to cope with the teen's passing.

Grief counselors from the Hospice of South Texas comforted students and staff members at Howell Middle School on Tuesday and Wednesday about Matthew's death, said VISD communications director Diane Boyett.

Counselors will be on campus again Thursday.

Josh Joines, the youth pastor at Faith Family's E3 (encounter, envision, equipped) youth meeting, offered a prayer for grieving students during the prayer segment of their regular Wednesday night meeting.

"I heard about the tragedy of losing a classmate and a friend," Joines said as he opened the prayer portion of the meeting.

Joines then invited students to pray and address any concerns or emotions they were facing in all areas of their lives.

Deacon Eduardo Molina at Our Lady of Sorrows, where the Spann family attended, said it is always a tragedy when people die as a result of firearm accidents and that it is important to make sure firearms are empty when they are being handled.

"The only thing I can say to the family is to pray for their son - knowing he is in a better place," Molina said. "I believe he is in the presence of God. If he died with sins on his soul, I pray for the mercy of God upon him."
