Victoria residents will begin receiving their recycling containers Tuesday.
The 96-gallon, green and yellow containers will be used when the city's curbside recycling program officially begins on Feb. 6., according to a news release from the city of Victoria.
Darryl Lesak, Environmental Services assistant director, said it will take up to three weeks to deliver the carts to about 20,000 residents who have water and garbage collection services with the city.
The curbside recycling program is only available at this time for residential customers.
Future plans to expand the program to include businesses and apartment complexes are being discussed, according to the news release.
Recycling will be picked-up every other week. There will be 10 recycling routes/areas and residents will receive information about the day of the week their recycling will be collected. Recycling will be collected on a different day from residents' normal trash pick-up.
Now that city residents will have a curbside recycling program, the Huvar Recycling Center will close on Feb. 4. Residents who recycle frequently can request an additional recycling cart for an extra $5 monthly fee.
The single-stream recycling program allows residents to mix recyclable paper, plastic, metals, cardboard and glass in one bin, according to the news release.
The following are examples of items that will not be accepted: Styrofoam, electronics, ceramics, dishes, yard waste, motor oil containers, light bulbs, hazardous waste, window glass, mirrors and trash.

January 2, 2012 at 1:17 p.m.Someone out there sells wine bottle top lanterns: http://www.recycledbride.com/uploads/... Someone has used the tops for making goblets: http://ninafette.files.wordpress.com/...

January 2, 2012 at 11:24 a.m.You can use the bottoms as drinking glasses and I am sure you can find craft ideas for the tops. I did a search and found this: http://www.thegreenhead.com/imgs/xl/b...
January 2, 2012 at 11:13 a.m.I'm not sure about the wine bottles but great idea on the chip bag sealer.

January 2, 2012 at 10:57 a.m.Here is another re-purpose/recycle idea for those nasty clothes hangers that we get from some stores: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fsvXJN8hUGw/Sov... Cut off the tips and use them to reseal bags of chips!
January 2, 2012 at 10:44 a.m.I wish I would have saved all those wine bottles over the years: http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.1... Recycled or re-purposed wine bottles make cute glasses!
January 2, 2012 at 10:14 a.m.I recycle, so this is a big help for me. I do collect about a tub of recyclables a week. If I don't take the tub to the recycle center, weekly, I end up with a carload of STUFF for them at one time.
I also keep egg cartons for my friends with chickens. =D
I'm supposed to be saving up wine corks for someone I know who makes wine, but it's hard to part with those. (So many craft ideas using corks over on Pinterest.)
January 2, 2012 at 10:08 a.m.This is a BIG WASTE. We had it in McAllen years ago and it was a waste of time and money , so they finally did away with it. Since none of the material could be put to use in the Valley everything had to to be trucked to San Antonio or some other large city. Also the cost of fuel to truck it had increased so much since that time that we will wind up paying a small fortune to dispose of it. GOOD LUCK, you will need it
January 2, 2012 at 10:02 a.m.This makes me so happy. We had this in San Antonio years ago and I loved it. Glad Victoria was able to get it here. Thank you. I will do my part .
