Editor, the Advocate:

United Supermarkets is a Texas-based chain of grocery stores (Texas panhandle).

While shopping there over Christmas break, I noticed every food item was issued a Nuval score. The Nuval score helps shoppers make better decisions about their food purchases. The scale is from 1 to 100; the higher the score the better the nutrition.

With concern about rising obesity rates, diabetes and heart disease, it's important for consumers to know what kind of nutrition we are getting when we shop. If you are interested in learning more, visit Nuval.com. While there, you can fill out the request for them to contact the grocery store of your choice.

If enough consumers in the Victoria area show an interest in the Nuval score, maybe we could get one or both of our major stores on board.

  • Agreed, Beakus. Don't get me wrong, I do like HEB, but I remember a time when Victoria had such a variety of markets. Competition is a good thing, and I miss having a choice.

The "Nuval" score? And why exactly is this needed? Americans already have all the nutrition information they could possibly need on the labels. Over the years, the labels have become easier to read and more complete so that the consumer may make an intelligent decision. Information is now at the touch of a fingertip via the web if a consumer doesn't understand what a "transfat" or a "carbohydrate" is. There is no excuse to not understand the information contained in today's nutrition labeling. If a consumer is too lazy/stupid/unconcerned to read a label, that is their problem. Note that Nuval.com is a COMMERCIAL website.

  • Maybe what Victoria could really use is a nice supermarket to locate on or near John Stockbauer or the loop near Airline or Ben Jordan. There are a dozen or more subdivisions in that area and they all are 3 to 5 miles from either of the two HEB or WalMart stores. Sooner or later some grocery chain will see the potential.
