Drought impact will be topic of Cuero town hall meeting

If you're worried about dwindling water in the face of the ongoing drought, this might be the meeting for you.

The Neighbor-to-Neighbor Town Hall Meeting series continues Saturday with a meeting titled "The Texas Drought and the Future of Our Water."

The meeting is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at the Cuero Park Clubhouse, 201 Leonard Roy Harmon Drive, Cuero.

It is the second meeting in the series organized by Neighbor-to-Neighbor, a group of community members who gather to discuss different concerns.

The water supply is being impacted by a number of things, said Sister Elizabeth Riebschlaeger, the event's organizer. Concerns include the drought and the water-use involved in the Eagle Ford Shale oil boom, using a technique called hydraulic fracturing, which requires millions of gallons of water to frack a well and get it flowing.

Concerned residents from DeWitt County and other neighboring counties are invited to attend the event and discuss various issues and concerns related to the water supply, Riebschlaeger said.

Riebschlaeger said the use of water in drilling the Eagle Ford Shale is only one of many concerns to be discussed on Saturday.

"The Texas drought and the future of our water is a general concern. That would be a major issue even without the Eagle Ford Shale," she said.

Alyssa Burgin, the executive director of the Texas Drought Project, a nonprofit organization, will speak about the drought and its impact on Texas water supplies now and in the future. A local rancher will be there to respond to the presentation.

The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and may remain after the formal discussion for one-on-one conversations with the speakers.
